Colony #2 is doing so much better than #1. They are much more bolder, feed better and are much more active. It’s strange how 2 colonies can be so different with identical set ups…
So i put them back in their original nest and out world and they have become active again, very odd. The larvae though seem to still be dormant ?
So last week found several workers running around the top of the tank, OMG!!!! Put them back in just to find some more a few moments later and again and again..There was a tiny hole in the mould at the base which they had chewed through. Phew no one got stung thank god….
Their tube is now busting at the seems with larvae and pupae, they are desperately in need of something bigger. I can’t decide whether to go with the moat idea as nothing i have tried seems to stop them climbing the sides. Such a worry.
So since the last update the colony has slowly been going down hill. The fungus in the main tank shrank to nothing and the ants were using it as a dump. Although there was still plenty of fungus in the tubes. The last couple of weeks the ants have refused to cut any leaves and the fungus in the tubes also started to shrink. I decided to empty out all the fungus into the foraging tank to find no queen apart from two alates and no larvae or pupae. What i thought was the original queen dying, was. At this point i decided to euthanize the colony. So sad……
Actually #2 colony is doing really well, it’s strange that they will actively hunt down fruit flies but #1 colony show no interest whats so ever preferring to pick at dead insects. Crickets are the preferred food of choice of both colonies.
Strange but this colony seems to be hibernating. They have piles of brood which are doing nothing and there are very few ants out in the arena. Something is not right
