Short video

Just a short video showing the ants and their brood. There are still only 4 workers and one media . They seem to be doing really well know since the arrival of the media but i have no plans yet to move them into a bigger nest. They spend most of their time attending to the brood and they are not often seen outside the test tube, perhaps once a week i might see one drinking the honey water, hopefully this will change when there are more.

Failing

So far this year there has probably been about 8 deaths in the colony and the numbers are not being replaced by new workers. The existing larvae just don’t seem to grow and i can’t see how the eggs i saw laid earlier have progressed. The lack of protein these ants consume is also strange yet similar to my Camponotus singularis which also take little protein, yet are thriving well. I think things started to go wrong for these ants when i moved the nest inside the arena so i think ill change it back to how it was before, or perhaps design a different nest for them.

Moved at last.

So yesterday i had enough of waiting for the ants to move into the new arena so i decided to take apart the Glass viv which the original nest was glued into. I was surprised that only 1 or 2 ants were outside the nest and had not swarmed out with all the disturbance i was creating for them. The whole operation of carefully taking the glass apart without breaking the front took about an hour, and now all the ants and nest are in situ in the new arena.( Note to myself, do not glue any more nests directly into the arena ) The new arena has a 55 wat dulux lighting rig which is very bright and gives off a large amount of heat, supplemented with a 100 wat spot

New Tier

I have added an extra tier on top of the original nest which gives them much more room and have also added a 60 x 45  x 45 cm arena for them. The biggest mistake was not to ad a hole in the original arena thus making it easier for them to move from one to the other.  I have made a bridge for them but after a week not one ant has tried to cross.  Also since i added the extra tier the ants have been very quiet.

No eggs or larvae in the nest at the moment.
